Main Stem Snake River

MAIN STEM SNAKE RIVER
ReportWidespread safe wading locations are present in the river above the reservoir because of the low flow. Brown trout are migrating to spawning areas throughout the river. Streamer and woolly bugger patterns on sink tip or full sinking lines with stout leaders are always the best producers. Evenings, early mornings, and stormy conditions are the best times to encounter them.
Flow below American Falls Dam is about 300 cfs, so wading there is now possible. Presenting streamer, woolly bugger, and large rubber leg patterns are best for encountering trout. Look for crowding directly below the dam, but fewer anglers at access sites downstream.
| Insect | Size | Activity | Prime Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brown Trout Spawn (migration) | N/A | Peak — fish are moving to spawning areas throughout the river | Early morning, evening, and during stormy conditions |
| Midges | #20–24 | Low background activity typical for October | Midday when temps peak |
| Blue-Winged Olive (Baetis) | #18–22 | Possible on overcast or stormy afternoons | Afternoon into early evening |
- EARLY MORNING (first light to 9 AM): Prime window for streamer and woolly bugger fishing to actively moving spawning browns — low light triggers aggressive strikes.
- EVENING (1 hour before sunset to dark): The other top window Madison calls out — swing big dark patterns through runs and seams as browns become most active.
- STORMY/OVERCAST CONDITIONS (any time of day): Cloudy skies and dropping pressure fire up brown trout throughout the day; don't wait for evening if a storm rolls through.
