Small Streams

Great fly fishing remains in the Teton River. All boat ramps are open, water is clear, cold, and of normal flow. Be wary of recreational floaters. Dry-dropper rigs using PMD life cycle patterns with yellow sally and a few golden stone patterns should be in that fly box. Caddis flies take over during evenings.  Large dry attractor patterns will bring up fish from sheltering canyon waters. These waters heat up most quickly on the river. From Hog Hollow downstream, PMDs are active during daytime hours with caddisflies active in the evening. McCoy Creek, Bear Creek and Palisades Creeks are in good dry fly condition with PMDs, some golden stones, and caddis activity resulting in feeding trout.  Fishing in the upper Blackfoot River may level off a bit because of low, warm flow but gets the fly fisher away from the crowds on the famed rivers nearby. Early in the day is best time to fish here. The river does not host abundant mayflies of any kind, but terrestrial insects presented close to banks and at the head of large holes will interest the cutthroat present. A few brookies coming down from Spring Creek are present. The Little Lost River drainage is in good fishing conditions with PMDs, yellow sallies and afternoon caddis attracting trout to feed. Fishing on Little Lost River drainage will be over in the next few weeks as it tends to warm significantly and decrease in flow as mid-summer approaches.
